Deb Hicks BAC Faculty, Art at Home Content Creator
How did you arrive at the Brookline Arts Center?
In 2016, I was first introduced to the BAC by friend and former colleague, Jacob Matz. Jacob introduced me and a gaggle of our work pals to his partner, Lauren Riviello, and soon we were all enjoying evenings together at some of the BAC’s great art openings!
Tell us about your background. How did you become interested in art?
I cannot trace my art interest back far enough – it’s as old as my memories. I’ve just always been interested in all things arts and crafts, including construction! Some of my earliest art memories involve drawing Pongo from the 101 Dalmatians and creating my own “how to draw a troll.” I was fortunate because my mom noticed my interest early on and sought out an art class for me to join.
What passions do you bring to the BAC community?
I am interested in the healing power of creating and the endless media that can be used in the process, including the body. Art is a universal language and has limitless potential for expressing feelings, sharing perspectives, and making connections.
What do you enjoy most about the BAC?
I find the BAC to be a very welcoming and friendly community and love the fact that I get to admire and learn from other artists, students included!
What was your favorite childhood art project?
It’s not a project, but in elementary school I lived for these coloring contests we’d have around holidays. Images were drawn by older students and copies were sold for like a quarter, and there were prizes for winners (like treasure trolls – and we’ve come full circle!).
Who are some of your art heroes?
I’d say my Grandma and Gran. They were both very artistic and always encouraged me to pursue art. My Gran, who I’m fortunate to still have, also taught me the art of baking, cooking, and quilting!
Do you have anything exciting coming up?
I’m hoping to finally complete a plant wall in the kitchen over Labor Day, and I just got a new set of watercolors that I’m looking forward to getting into!
