Community Spotlight: Giulia Ferraro
How did you arrive at the BAC?
I found BAC while walking around the neighborhood and immediately looked up their website. I think BAC is a really nice organization for both teaching and learning.
Tell us about your background and interests related to the BAC?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Art History from the University of Milan and a Master's in Education Museum from the University Cattolica of Sacro Cuore of Milan, Italy. During my Master's, I worked at the Museum Popolie Culture, Foundation PIME Onlus in Milan. I was responsible for developing and delivering educational programs for school groups, mainly for children ages 6-11.
I worked as a primary teacher in Varese, Italy. In 2020, I worked with the second and fourth grades, and in 2022, I worked with first-grade children.
In early August 2022, I moved from Italy to Boston. A few months later I discovered BAC. Thanks to BAC it offers me the opportunity to develop my teaching practice, my English and above all it allows me to work with children in a free, explorative and expressive way.
What other passions do you bring to the BAC community?
In addition to my passion for art, I enjoy traveling, reading and cooking.
What has brought you the most joy as a creative and as an art teacher?
One of the things that makes me happy is seeing how children manage to unleash their creativity with every project I propose. I like to talk, ask guiding questions and listen to their opinions/thoughts but also disappointments and perplexities about the art world.
What was your favorite childhood art project?
During my childhood I was always in the garden playing. I loved spending hours building things with Legos, it was one of my favorite pastimes.
Among the projects I hold dear to my heart is definitely designing a sundial (the design would have been selected by my teachers and then would have been made on the main façade of my elementary school).
I had made a garden of flowers and plants; it was wonderful.
What artists or kinds of art are you into right now?
Right now I am trying to approach contemporary American art. I visited the ICA in Boston and a world opened up to me that I didn't know.
Among the things I like to know/understand the most are the techniques and materials artists use to make their projects/installations.
What are three things that you would want the BAC community to know about you?
During college I liked to go to the Museo del 900 in Milan and spend hours looking at the works of Umberto Boccioni. They were and are mesmerizing to me. Every time I see them, they give me different feelings.
I like to draw flowers and trees.
My favorite museum is the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Austria.
When youβre not at the BAC, where can people find you?
I like to discover the city of Boston, especially the museums and the Arnold Arboretum park.
