How did you arrive at the Brookline Arts Center?
Erik exhibited work in a juried group show, Object(ive), in the spring of this year and through further research into the Brookline Arts Center the two discovered the residency. Crislin and Erik then made several site visits to the BAC to envision a site-specific installation allowing them the opportunity to collaborate in a new way.
Tell us about your background. How did you become interested in art?
Crislin and Erik met at Boston University in 2008 while both pursuing their Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in painting and sculpture, respectively. The two discovered that their work was less traditional than their peers in the program and began discussing collaborations as early as 2009.
What passions do you bring to the BAC community?
Crislin and Erik bring their passion for diverse materials, dark and cool color schemes, reflective light, and beautiful natural forms to the BAC.
What do you enjoy most about the BAC?
Crislin and Erik truly value the level of support and dedication the BAC and its staff work hard to provide to local artists. The Echo Trobridge Artist Residency demonstrates how the BAC directly impacts the lives of artists in the greater Brookline community.
What was your favorite childhood art project?
Crislin enjoyed making a paper car while in first grade, complete with looped chain adornment. Erik loved creating an interactive volcano sculpture in third grade, where he incorporated a variety of materials including moss and gravel.
Who are some of your art heroes?
Erik has always looked at the work of the minimalist sculptor Richard Serra, and has recently enjoyed the work of painter, Claire Sherman. Currently Crislin is inspired by Dutch still life, and enjoys the work of contemporary artists Marilyn Minter and Pat Steir. The two are very enthusiastic about the work of Amy Sedaris.
Do you have anything exciting coming up?
Both Erik and Crislin are extremely excited about future collaborations with one another.
